Today’s Meditation: Pursuit And Risk

9 August 2007

Some esteem-boosting words on the wake of my GMAT exam:

“As you pursue passion, you gain strength and perspective.  Leap like a cat, wild and willing.  Land on your feet every time, thrilled by the prospect of the hunt…” (Birdie Lawson)

To get as much mileage out of this quote as possible, and to discourage further ankle destruction, I’ll be sure to ruminate on the “land on your feet” portion before taekwondo this evening.

There’s A Little Entreprenuerial Spirit In All Of Us

I think it’s good to have some good catchy names on hand in case I ever decide to start my own business. Gotta stand out in the yellow pages, after all.

Are These The Same Guests Who Aren’t Aware That You Own A Media Empire?

“‘It’s a great pleasure to set the table with custom napkins,’ Martha says.  ‘My guests can’t believe that I made them myself.’” (p. 212, Issue No. 166; September 2007)

Shit, Martha, I thought you had the kind of friends who’d start to worry if you HADN’T set the photo-finish dinnertable with personalized cloth napkins.  Also, this quote loses even more credibility when it is superimposed over a photograph of your massive, newly-renovated in-house craft workspace, complete with multiple sewing machines and a whole desk devoted to colored glue storage.  Martha, Martha, Martha…

Are You Less Of A Tourist If You Go To Pearl River With A Shopping List?

3 August 2007

Mom and Emma are in town for the weekend. We kicked off the visit with a trek through Chinatown, mainly because I needed to pick up some Chinese chess sets (Kevin and I are going to play via phone/internet, but with real chess sets for reference… in our minds, this makes sense), and we were all craving bao and tea and soup dumplings. I introduced them to Pearl River, which Emma was skeptical/apathetic about, until we walked inside and she saw that this vast warehouse was just a convenient and air-conditioned version of Canal Street, with the added bonus of credit card machines at checkout.
